Can the animals in your water system breathe?

Dissolved oxygen analysis will measure the amount of gaseous oxygen (O2) in your sample. Oxygen enters water by diffusion from the surrounding air, by aeration (rapid movement), and as a waste product of photosynthesis.

A dissolved oxygen test must be performed quickly, and that is why you are completing this test on site!

Adequate dissolved oxygen is necessary for good water quality. Fish and other animals that live in the water need oxygen to live. Natural water systems can never have too much oxygen. However, if levels are too low in the water, fish and other animals can suffocate and die.

What do the Dissolved Oxygen results mean?

Dissolved Oxygen (mg/L)

1 — 3: At these levels, all fish species would die.

4 — 5: At these levels very few fish can survive and will be stressed. Fish may be able to survive for 12-24 hours under these conditions, if necessary.

6 — 7: At these levels, most big fish can live, though some small fish cannot.

8 — 10: At these levels, all fish can live healthy lives a large fish population can be supported.
